NUR 600: Building Resilience and Wellness: Applications of Nursing Theory

The nursing profession involves continuous interaction with patients, families, colleagues, and complex healthcare environments. These experiences can shape how nurses understand wellness, resilience, stress, and the need for effective adaptation. According to Zhang (2024), nursing theories provide useful perspectives for connecting everyday clinical experiences with broader concepts that guide professional practice. They also encourage nurses to consider how individuals respond to changing circumstances and how supportive care can promote positive outcomes. Reflecting on theoretical perspectives can therefore strengthen a nurse’s understanding of personal experiences and professional responsibilities. This discussion explores Neuman’s Systems Model and Roy’s Adaptation Model, considering their relevance to nursing practice and professional growth.

Neuman’s Systems Model and Nursing Practice

Neuman’s Systems Model presents the person as a dynamic system that continually interacts with internal and external stressors while attempting to preserve stability and wellness. This perspective reflects what I have observed in nursing practice. Patients rarely respond to illness in the same way, even when their diagnoses appear similar (Alligood & Hardin, 2026). Some individuals regain strength when they receive treatment, reassurance, adequate rest, and support, whereas others require more sustained assistance. I have observed that emotional encouragement, clear communication, and family involvement can influence a patient’s ability to regain balance during periods of illness, uncertainty, and change. These observations have made the model meaningful in practice.

One experience that supports Neuman’s theory involved caring for a patient whose recovery was complicated by sources of stress, including physical discomfort, uncertainty about treatment, and limited confidence in managing care. Without identifying the patient or specific circumstances, I observed that nursing interventions addressing physical and emotional needs improved participation in care. Explaining procedures, listening to concerns, reinforcing achievable goals, and coordinating support helped reduce distress and encouraged greater engagement in care. This experience strengthened my understanding that wellness involves more than treating a disease process. Consistent with Neuman’s model, nursing care can help reduce the effects of stressors and support movement toward greater system stability and wellness.

Roy’s Adaptation Model and Nursing Practice

Sister Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model views individuals as adaptive systems who respond to changing internal and external conditions through coping processes. The model emphasizes that people continually encounter stimuli that can affect their functioning, requiring responses that promote adaptation and preserve integrity (Alligood & Hardin, 2026). Roy identifies four adaptive modes: physiological-physical, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. Together, these modes provide nurses with a broader perspective for understanding how illness can influence multiple dimensions of a person’s life. Rather than viewing health solely through physical symptoms, the model encourages nurses to recognize behaviors, assess stimuli, and provide interventions that strengthen adaptive responses in health contexts.

One aspect I could apply to my personal nursing practice is Roy’s emphasis on assessing patients’ responses to health-related stimuli. In practice, I can look beyond immediate clinical findings and consider how changes in health affect emotional well-being, responsibilities, relationships, and daily functioning. For example, when a patient receives a new diagnosis or has a prolonged recovery, I can use therapeutic communication to identify concerns and recognize behaviors that may indicate difficulty adapting. I can then individualize education, encouragement, and supportive interventions according to identified needs. This approach could strengthen patient participation and promote more effective coping while respecting individual differences, preferences, and circumstances.

Conclusion

Nursing theories provide valuable foundations for understanding how individuals experience health, illness, stress, and change. Neuman’s and Roy’s perspectives offer complementary approaches that encourage nurses to consider both factors affecting patients and their responses to those challenges. Their application can strengthen assessment, guide individualized interventions, and support meaningful participation in care. These perspectives also reinforce the importance of addressing patients as whole persons whose needs extend beyond physical conditions. Integrating theory with reflective practice can enhance professional judgment, communication, and responsiveness. Ultimately, theoretical knowledge becomes most meaningful when it guides compassionate nursing actions that promote wellness, adaptation, and improved quality of life across diverse healthcare experiences.
