Humans experience many things in life; some are unknown, while others require a more profound, divine reflection. Sometimes, differentiating right from wrong becomes challenging, depending on the situation. Spirituality is characterized by the intentional pursuit of connection with a higher being. It recognizes that humans are not alone in this world and a higher being is responsible for life and its purpose. Bogue and Hogan (2020) described spirituality as an inherent aspect of humanity where human beings seek ultimate meaning, purpose, and a relationship to the significant and sacred. This intensive search for the meaning of life extends physical reality, with religious beliefs being a central component. Within Christianity, individuals discover life’s meaning by developing a personal relationship with God as informed by the Bible. Worship, prayers, fasting, and sacraments are common religious practices in Christianity.

In nursing and many other areas, people encounter dilemmatic issues requiring them to make informed decisions. Such decisions require doing what is right and avoiding wrong actions that harm other people or components of the universe. Ethics is a philosophical branch that defines the principles of moral behavior. From a Christian perspective, ethics determines right and wrong actions based on God’s established moral standards (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). The Bible helps Christians to understand these standards by outlining what God wants for humanity and what is condemned. For instance, killing is wrong since God denounces it, while justice is right since God is just and requires people to do the same. The Bible further guides Christians on ethical decision-making by outlining the consequences of unethical behavior.

Humans interpret the world differently depending on the knowledge sources that inform their worldviews. The different religions manifest humans’ efforts to understand the world and its components. Scientism is a philosophical position that people can only know reality through sciences (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). In this case, anything that cannot be proven scientifically cannot be known or is inexistence. Accordingly, true beliefs are those known scientifically.

The first argument against scientism is its limiting nature. Despite the powerful nature of science as a source of knowledge about the natural world, it cannot act as the main source. Based on this limitation, Jaeger (2022) recommended that scientists and theologians collaborate so that the world can benefit from the fruitful interactions between scientific and theological approaches to issues. A suitable example of science’s limits is its inability to guide people on ethical issues. For instance, science may provide knowledge on illness prevention through vaccines. However, it cannot guide healthcare professionals in determining whether immunizing people without their consent is right.

Scientism is also considered false since it is a self-refuting philosophy. This implies that it has propositions that invalidate themselves. For instance, scientism cannot be proven scientifically; the approach it uses to annul other knowledge sources (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). It is like someone claiming not to understand a particular language while speaking it. By relying primarily on scientism to understand reality, ethics and religions turn into subjective knowledge of the world. Such an approach is intolerant and signifies bigotry. Unless scientism can be proven using its methods, it remains inherently subjective, like religions.

From a personal viewpoint, ultimate reality is founded on the precept that life has a natural existing source. Due to the unphysical nature of this source, believers and non-believers contradict the source of life and the meaning attached to it. For religious believers, including Christians and Muslims, the ultimate reality comes from God. Hence, God is the source of our existence as the creator of the world and what is in it. On the other hand, atheists do not recognize a higher power as the source of life’s meaning. To them, human reason determines what is real and existing, as well as its meaning and purpose.

The nature of the universe is guided by one’s beliefs and knowledge sources about how the world emerged. As a result, humans will never have a standard view of the origin of life. For an atheist like myself, the universe results from God’s creative and purposeful work. As a result, we are allowed to use what is in the universe for our existence and what is right for others. Besides what is visible, the universe has a spiritual component where God’s and humans’ spirits interact. This view of the nature of the universe differs from atheists who argue that the universe is made up of atoms that make up the objects in the world (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). For atheists, the universe is a natural process where a supreme being is not responsible.

One’s worldview informs the meaning of a human being. In this case, religious beliefs are fundamental to understanding who a human being is and the purpose of existence. Like other components of the universe, human beings are God’s creation. The Bible states that God commissions humanity to rule the world and partners with him as rulers and co-creators (BibleProject, 2017). As co-creators, human beings have many attributes similar to God, including the image and ability to live, know things, and reason. This perspective differs from the atheist worldview, which considers humans as a purely natural biological species (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). Despite varying perspectives, there is purpose in human life and existence, particularly nurturing the world and enjoying what is in it. Human believers are also mandated to worship their creator as they look forward to an afterlife with him.

Knowledge is primarily about the information that people possess about the world, the meaning of people, and the purpose of life. It also includes how people interpret how the universe came to exist and what will happen after life. In agreement with Bogue and Hogan (2020), knowledge is not limited to what is observable or testable in the physical world. This is because there are also spiritual/divine knowledge sources that help people to understand the complexities of life from multiple dimensions. Typically, Christians rely on natural sciences and God as the main sources of knowledge. Natural sciences provide testable knowledge, while the Bible guides people in interpreting morality and discovering issues beyond the physical universe. Religious knowledge is derived from sacred tests and differs across religions and cultures.

Ethics includes standards that guide human actions. These standards determine right and wrong, broadly prescribing humans’ obligations to society and other people. A morally right person avoids harming others and is committed to bettering the world for all humans. Classifying actions as right or wrong is primarily informed by one’s worldview. For instance, atheists argue that humans make individual decisions about their responsibility toward others and nature (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). As such, human reason guides them in determining what is right and wrong. Conversely, theists have a divine foundation for ethics. They act as God informs them, implying an ethical mandate from God to humanity (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). Justice, kindness, humility, and other ethical acts are right because God requires people to do them.

People pursue different goals in life, including living happily, serving people in a political office, and nurturing talents. Beyond these personal goals, life has a higher purpose, which is informed by one’s worldview. For atheists, humans define their purpose and guides them throughout their life. I believe that humans have personal and divine purposes that should be pursued simultaneously. In this case, humans should serve God and implement his will as they strive to achieve their personal goals. From a Christian perspective, serving God includes worship, prudent use of natural resources, and vocational calling (Bogue & Hogan, 2020). Irrespective of career, social status, and religious inclination, all humans should be active in creating a better world for everyone while avoiding actions that deplete resources and harm others. Like others, my life and existence should be meaningful by contributing positively to transforming the world as I realize personal goals.

I believe that all humans have an innate value regardless of their race, religious beliefs, and social status. As a healthcare professional, I possess God-given traits and skills that I should use in health promotion and advocacy. For instance, I better understand what patients need to recover from their conditions and live healthily. These diverse patients deserve kindness, justice, and compassion due to their inherent value and as God commands. When making health decisions, I look forward to outcomes that improve people’s lives and protect their dignity as God’s unique beings. Such an approach helps me to establish healthy relationships with patients and formulate treatment plans that enhance healing. For future practice, I should continue improving my skills to ensure I make accurate health decisions and that I am better positioned to improve the world as a skilled, passionate, and compassionate nursing professional who respects humans’ innate value and dignity.
