NURS 8201 WEEK 9 DISCUSSION |
Research Question: What are the experiences of school-going children with preventative school-based mental health interventions?
Justification for Qualitative Research Design: A qualitative research design is the most suitable for this research question because it seeks an in-depth understanding of social phenomena within their natural setting. Busetto et al. (2020) explain that qualitative research is the study of the nature of phenomena. Besides, it is particularly suitable for answering questions of why something is (not) observed, assessing complex multi-component interventions, and focusing on intervention improvement. Thus, qualitative research can be used to establish the experiences of school-going children receiving school-based mental health support (Spencer et al., 2020). Furthermore, a qualitative design can help identify ways to improve preventative school-based mental health interventions to enhance the learners’ experiences.
Ethical Considerations: When researching children’s experiences, the primary risk is the potential to trigger or cause emotional or psychological distress. Therefore, the researcher should adhere to the ethical principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence by ensuring the study does not distress the children’s emotional or psychological well-being (Spriggs, 2023). Furthermore, since children are minors, one has to obtain consent from their parents/guardians and explain the risks and benefits of participating in the research.

TO PREPARE:
- Review the Learning Resources for this week and reflect on qualitative research methods and designs.
- Select a topic or issue in nursing practice to focus on for this Discussion.
- Consider a qualitative research question that you might develop to address the topic or issue in nursing practice that you selected.
- Reflect on how a qualitative research design might best support a research study to address your research question.
BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 9
WRITE a qualitative research question in relation to your topic or issue of interest. Explain why a qualitative research design is best suited to support this research question. Then, describe potential ethical considerations you should keep in mind in relation to your qualitative research question. Be specific and provide examples.
