NRNP 6552 Social Determinants of Health Among the Female Population
Social Determinants of Health among the Female Population
Who is most Affected?
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions, in which people are born, grow, work, age, and die. It also includes the social systems that influence people’s daily lives, health, and well-being. Women experience a range of SDOH in my community. They include low income, poor access to healthcare, unemployment, educational status, and the environment where women live. SDOH affects women of ethnic minority backgrounds more than it does to those of ethnic majority groups. For example, black women are highly likely to be uninsured when compared to non-Hispanic white women (Yearby, 2020). As a result, they experience significant challenges in accessing the care that they need than non-Hispanic white women.
What Major Challenges Have You Found?
As noted above, the lack of medical insurance among women affects their access to the healthcare services they need for their health and well-being. Women also suffer from low pay as compared to men, as seen from the data that they on average earn 82 cents for a dollar that men make. Women of ethnic minority backgrounds experience worse economic disparities than non-Hispanic women and men (Snyder-Mackler et al., 2020; Yearby, 2020). Women of color also experience discrimination, structural inequality, and systemic racism, which affect their healthcare experiences and cause disparities in health.
What Changes Could You Propose
Several interventions can be adopted to address SDOH in women. Firstly, women can be linked with the existing social resources to help them access the care that they need. Social resources such as community support groups can help them cope with their health challenges. The other way is through community education and involvement in addressing social norms and issues that contribute to the SDOH (Coughlin, 2019). Community education would raise awareness and promote the adoption of interventions that address the challenges.
Risk Assessment Instruments and Potential Health Risks
Some of the risk assessment instruments that would be appropriate for use when assessing women include the Women’s Health Questionnaire, which identifies social, and health risks, and breast cancer assessment for breast cancer. The potential health risks for women include breast cancer, osteoporosis, cervical cancer, and major depression (Crear-Perry et al., 2021).

SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AMONG THE FEMALE POPULATION
An individual’s health is influenced by many factors. Nurse Practitioners must be versed in all factors and adept in assessing the impact of economic conditions, education, environment, and social conditions on health.
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) have a major impact on people’s health, well-being, and quality of life. Examples of SDOH include:
- Safe housing, transportation, and neighborhoods
- Racism, discrimination, and violence
- Education, job opportunities, and income
- Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities
- Polluted air and water
- Language and literacy skills
For this Discussion, you will explore Social Determinants of Health and five areas that are impacted. For your community where you reside, assess these five areas. You will also explore available instruments to complete a full assessment of an individual’s SDOH.
RESOURCES
Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity.
Click the weekly resources link to access the resources.
To prepare:
- Who is most affected?
- What major challenges have you found?
- What changes could you propose?
- What risk assessment instruments would be appropriate to use when assessing your community?
- Identify any potential health-related risks based upon the community age groups.
BY DAY 3
Post a brief summary of the findings of the Social Determinants of Health in your community for each of the five areas described above. When providing your summary, take into consideration the preparation questions above and incorporate those into the summary.
References should be used to support your findings.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
BY DAY 6
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts on two different days and provide additional insight to your colleagues related to issues and topics they may want to also consider. Use the Learning Resources and/or the best available evidence from current literature to support your explanation.
Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues’ postings.
