Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Directions: In this assignment, you and a partner will create and present a public educational tool for “PTSD Awareness and Management.” The educational tool should be appropriate to show or handout in a community center or clinic. The educational tool can be any of the following:
- Posters and collages
- Brochures or pamphlets
- Informative videos
- Mixed-media presentations
- Online tools
Components:
- With your partner, choose one of the following specific populations that is affected by PTSD to focus your assignment on:
- Soldiers and Veterans
- Survivors of Violence and Trauma: Terrorism
- Survivors of Violence and Trauma: Human Trafficking
- Survivors of Violence and Trauma: Sexual Assault
- Survivors of Violence and Trauma: Elder Abuse
- Survivors of Violence and Trauma: Childhood Abuse
- The presentation of your educational tool must include the following discussions:
- Explain the etiology of PTSD based on your chosen population.
- Describe the focused nursing assessment for your chosen population:
- What particular concerns should the nurse address during the assessment?
- Safety, comorbidities, etc.
- What specific manifestations/major symptoms does your chosen population with PTSD display?
- What particular concerns should the nurse address during the assessment?
- Discuss the risk for complications, such as relapse, drug use, financial troubles, etc.
- Explain how the nurse will address and manage the needs of your chosen population?
- Psychopharmacology
- Resources (counseling, medical care, finances, etc.)
- Present your educational tool to the class, noting how it will help improve public awareness for your chosen population.
Presentation Requirements:
- All presentations must be no less than 10 minutes.
- All presentations and handouts must be in APA format.
- You must use a minimum of two nursing references to support your project, and one must be a current (within the last 5 years) and peer-reviewed nursing journal.
- Assignments will be graded according to the grading rubric, and both partners will receive the same grade.
