Benchmark – Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal – Topic 7

As demonstrated in Topic 6, project resources are critical to implementing the proposed change project to integrate emergency preparedness among teachers through a structured training program in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the management of medical emergencies in schools before the arrival of professional help. A discussion with my preceptor has also explored the relationships among policy, regulatory requirements, and economics in patient care outcomes, especially the link between regulatory requirements and available financial resources. Based on this discussion, it is evident that the relationship between policy, regulatory requirements, and economics is not only a complex one but also critical to effectively implement the proposed project.

Organizations and governments enact policies and regulations to guide the delivery of safe, quality, and effective healthcare to patients. These entities provide guidelines on patient care, staff training and retooling, expected facility standards, and core competencies for practitioners to comply with before being licensed to practice (Bradshaw et al., 2024). Therefore, organizational policies must align with set regulatory requirements like safe care, quality mandates, and patient satisfaction levels (American Heart Association, 2023). In this case, school policies on first aid should align with regulatory mandates and best practices set by regulatory and professional organizations like the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, and federal agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Economics determines the financial resources to implement and maintain healthcare services, even outside the traditional healthcare settings. Therefore, the economic situation in a facility dictates the resources available for implementation of proposed change projects, including one on emergency preparedness among teachers.

Regulatory requirements and available financial resources will significantly affect the proposed project as it must comply with the set legal and ethical standards and have sufficient funding to conduct activities to improve teachers’ emergency preparedness. For instance, the project will have to comply with set standards on training the teachers in first aid approaches, CPR, and medical emergencies. Financial resources are required to cover costs associated with the equipment, instructor compensation, and training materials. Therefore, limited financial resources will limit the scope of the proposed project in the practicum facility. Regulatory requirements, economics, and policies will impact the care offered in the practicum site as they may limit or expand the scope and quality of care. For example, sufficient resources and alignment with regulatory requirements will enhance access to care for patients with diverse healthcare issues (Cassidy et al., 2021). Better access to quality care will result in improved care outcomes for patients in the practicum site due to the availability of services. Supportive and better regulatory requirements will enhance quality outcomes as patients will get better services from committed healthcare providers.

Reflection and Example

A reflection on my practicum site based on my experience shows that these relationships and interactions are practical or real. For example, a recent policy change on first aid required the facility to adhere to the state’s regulatory aspects, which allowed the facility to hire the services of trained instructors and healthcare providers, leading to the implementation of the current proposed change. The school had to get resources to facilitate the training and retooling of teachers, and even older students, to understand and implement various components of first aid and emergency preparedness (Cassidy et al., 2021). In conclusion, policy, regulatory requirements, and economic aspects are intertwined and have a substantial impact on patient care outcomes, including implementing the proposed change project in schools to improve teachers’ first aid and CPR skills and techniques.

Assessment Description

Students are required to submit reflective journal entries at specific points throughout the course. These reflective narratives help students identify important learning events that happen throughout the course and the practicum.

Write a reflective journal 500 words to outline how your experience at your practicum site related to the following reflective questions:

  • You have developed a list of resources needed for your project implementation in Topic 6. To complete this reflective journal, discuss with your preceptor the relationship between policy, regulatory requirements, and economics on care outcomes. Discuss how regulatory requirements and financial resources available will impact your project. How do you think this will impact the care that your practicum site will be able to provide?
  • Reflect on the relationship you discussed above as well as your practicum site experience. Provide an example from your practicum site of these relationships or discuss an example from your professional or personal experience.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected.
