Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a foundation of improved outcomes for patients, care providers, and organizations. Disseminating EBP results implies sharing information with the broader nursing practice: it communicates strategically crafted methods to particular stakeholder groups (Baker et al., 2021; Estabrooks et al., 2023). The effectiveness of dissemination strategies varies with the type of method and targeted audience.

I am most inclined to use an organization-wide presentation, education materials, and policy briefs. These strategies are effective information-sharing approaches to target internal stakeholders, particularly nursing professionals and leaders. Education materials include an EBP project summary report, brochures, and handouts. A policy brief provides a concise summary of a practice issue and appropriate policy options while recommending the best intervention to deal with the issue. Ashcraft et al. (2020) underlined the importance of printed educational materials and policy briefs as effective internal dissemination strategies. I would be least inclined to publish EBP results in a scholarly journal and present the findings to members of a professional association. Although they are effective for external dissemination of EBP results, these strategies are complex and costly to implement.

EBP dissemination encounters various barriers that I might encounter when using my preferred strategies. A common barrier is inadequate resources to fully support a culture of EBP (Pitsillidou et al., 2021). In this case, despite implementing the EBP project, I might encounter financial and material support required to share my findings. This would affect the processing and distribution of educational materials and policy briefs as well as a comprehensive presentation to stakeholders. The other possible barrier is timing. Other professionals might be busy with their schedules to participate in an organization-wide presentation. Overcoming these barriers requires a multidimensional approach involving various interventions. For instance, timely communication with the management is crucial to earning the required buy-in to support EBP implementation at all levels. The education materials can also be shared electronically to reduce dissemination costs.

Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

As your EBP skills grow, you may be called upon to share your expertise with others. While EBP practice is often conducted with unique outcomes in mind, EBP practitioners who share their results can both add to the general body of knowledge and serve as an advocate for the application of EBP.

In this Discussion, you will explore strategies for disseminating EBP within your organization, community, or industry.

Identify at least two barriers you might encounter when using the dissemination strategies you are most inclined to use. Be specific and provide examples. Explain how you might overcome the barriers you identified.

By Day 6 of Week 9

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by offering additional ideas to overcome the barriers to strategies suggested by your colleagues and/or by offering additional ideas to facilitate dissemination.
