Journal Entry

Studying the United States history has exposed me to new topics and improved my knowledge of previously learned concepts. One of the lessons that affect me in my daily life or work is terrorism. The learning resources, especially the book, have provided insights into how American citizens are highly vulnerable to internal and external threats. Terrorism affects me since I need to be vigilant and collaborate with other people to secure our homes, workplaces, and communities. The other lesson was on industrialization and imperialism (Week 5). Corbett et al. (2023) explore issues like social segregation, structural racism, and the impact of the Industrial Revolution. This lesson impacts me in daily life since segregation still exists. It threatens peaceful coexistence since it hampers diversity in a world where racial, gender, and cultural differences should be embraced and celebrated.

Diversity and progressive achievements celebrations are vital for social cohesion and encouraging individuals or groups to engage in works that impact communities positively. One recent improvement in my community is the Columbia Values Diversity Celebration in January this year. Among the winners was Crowned Counseling, an organization that offers safe and non-judgmental space for individuals with mental health needs (City of Columbia, 2025). These services help to minimize equity differences in accessing quality mental health care by offering pro bono services to marginalized communities. Crowned Counseling targets Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities (BIPOC).
