The exploration of basic research concepts, techniques, and methodologies has provided me with a strong foundation for critically evaluating nursing problems and potential solutions. Gaining insight into the distinction between quantitative and qualitative approaches has helped demystify the entire research process, making journal articles far less intimidating to read, interpret, and appraise. I now understand how a study’s design is intentionally selected to align with its clinical question, which is an essential skill for any nurse seeking to advance knowledge.

A significant skill developed throughout this course was the ability to identify researchable clinical problems with the explicit purpose of improving patient outcomes. I understood that the process of formulating a precise PICOT question forces a refinement of general curiosity into a structured, answerable inquiry (Feldener & Dutka, 2024). This methodological approach empowers nurses to actively seek solutions for their everyday observations actively, ensuring that nursing research remains grounded in the real-world challenges faced by patients and healthcare teams on the front lines.

Becoming proficient in using information technology to retrieve hierarchical levels of evidence has been another essential competency I developed during this learning process. Navigating academic databases, such as CINAHL and PubMed, demands not only technical expertise but also the ability to think critically when filtering, evaluating, and selecting the most substantial and relevant evidence. This process extends far beyond performing a simple internet search. I can now confidently locate high-quality research, a vital skill for staying current and consistently supporting evidence-based patient care.

The course emphasized the development of critical thinking and written communication skills, enabling me to effectively critique research for its accuracy and applicability within nursing practice. Writing detailed appraisals enhanced my ability to thoroughly evaluate a study’s validity, reliability, and appropriateness for a specific patient population context. Expressing critiques in a professional and organized manner is essential for effectively sharing findings with colleagues. This type of communication strongly supports advocacy for evidence-based practice improvements that are meaningful and informed (Falcó‐Pegueroles et al., 2021).

Integrating research findings into nursing practice to meet the evolving needs of patients is the ultimate goal of evidence-based practice. This course outlined practical strategies for overcoming common barriers to implementation, including limited time, inadequate resources, or organizational resistance, all of which are prevalent in clinical environments. Learning to design a persuasive plan for change and engage key stakeholders builds confidence in leading nursing initiatives. Utilizing internal evidence ensures these initiatives are achievable, meaningful, and genuinely impactful in improving patient care.

Understanding current research priorities in nursing, as identified by leading organizations, offers critical direction for future inquiry and professional development. This knowledge creates an essential bridge between individual unit-based practice and the broader goals of the healthcare system, including the vital initiative to advance health equity. When local quality improvement projects align with these national priorities, our efforts extend beyond immediate patient care to encompass broader community health initiatives. I realized such alignment advances nursing while fulfilling societal responsibilities that promote healthier, more equitable communities for all.

Ultimately, the course emphasized the paramount importance of carefully considering legal, ethical, and cultural aspects when conducting research involving human subjects. Revisiting historical events that shaped today’s ethical codes highlighted the non-negotiable necessity of vigilance and participant protection. I learned that having a firm grasp of guiding principles, such as autonomy, is essential, as they safeguard individuals while advancing knowledge (Khanal, 2025). These principles ensure that the pursuit of valuable evidence never overshadows nursing’s fundamental duty to uphold human rights and well-being.
