MSN 550 Topic 4 Discussion 1 Reliability and Validity in Research Design

Nursing research play a significant role in nursing. For instance, it leads to the generation of new evidence, which is then used to improve patient outcomes. Therefore, an appropriate design should be used. A good design should consider aspects such as validity and reliability. While the two terms are prominently used in research, they are distinct. Reliability is the repeatability and consistency of findings or measurements in a particular study (Sürücü & Maslakci, 2020). Therefore, it helps assess the extent to which the same results can be achieved if the study were carried out under similar conditions. On the other hand, validity is the extent to which a particular research or study can accurately assess or measure what it was intended to measure. The implication is that it helps in evaluating whether the findings obtained are relevant to the formulated research question or, in some cases, the formulated hypothesis.

The article chosen from the graphic organizer is an article authored by Marty Cooney et al. (2020). An analysis of the methods and results section can give an insight into validity and reliability as it relates to the translational research. The design used is quasi-experimental. Even though their internal validity is lower in comparison to the randomized controlled trials, the consistency in data collection methods and application of the intervention has contributed to the reliability of the findings. The applications of standardized data collection protocols and standardized analysis also lead to reliability (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). The consistency in the findings has also enhanced the reliability.

In reference to validity, a specific patient population was included, and real-world clinical data was used, boosting the study’s external validity. Standard definitions have also been used in identifying CLABSI events, which ensures that CLABSI cases are accurately identified and classified, which then boosts the validity of the study outcomes. The statistical analysis also compares the CLABSI rates before and after the intervention using the CDC’s statistical calculator, which indicates a rigorous approach. Such a robust approach also enhances the validity of the results (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021).
