Week 1 Collaboration Café: Historical Influences on Nursing Today

The history of nursing or an institution like Chamberlain University provides insights into their journey to acquiring their current statuses. A notable surprise about Chamberlain’s unique history is how it goes back to the Deaconess tradition and its model, where healthcare services address the local community needs. Based on this model, Chamberlain, which means chief steward, recognizes the valuable role of the nurse as the central steward and patient care coordinator (Chamberlain University LLC., 2025). The continuity of this history inspires Chamberlain to empower nursing students and raise the standard of nursing education to make positive contributions to the global community.

Nursing image evolves as people’s knowledge increases, perceptions change, and services improve, among other factors. My image of nursing is a practice where highly qualified professionals of all genders, races, and ages work passionately to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in a caring environment. This image differs from media portrayals of nursing as a female profession of young individuals who are subordinate and subservient to physicians (González et al., 2023). Although nursing has been a female-dominated profession for a long time, portraying them as young and following exclusive orders from physicians differs from what the practice is today. All ages are present, and many nurses work autonomously in many full-practice authority states.

History drives the future, implying that today’s actions and views will shape the future of nursing. This influence is inevitable since current policies, education programs, and practice values will determine how nursing will perceive and address future issues. Today’s actions will also influence the type of issues that nursing will face in the future. Consequently, there is a need for policies that promote diversity, solutions to the nursing shortage, curricula that empower nurses to address contemporary public health issues, and ethos that facilitates a sense of belonging in the profession (Sumpter et al., 2022). Among others, these actions will influence a practice that welcomes and works for everyone. Nursing professionals and the public will also be confident in it; hence, a positive perception.
