The nursing practice is a growing field that continues to adapt to various changes and trends around it to benefit both nurses and patients. One of the areas that has changed in the last century in nursing is the concept of patient-centered care. Patient or person-centered care (PCC) incorporates a patient’s values, preferences, and beliefs into health decision-making and care delivery. The concept has evolved, making the patient the most critical part of quality care delivery based on models like value-based care as advanced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). A patient-centered approach heavily considers patients’ preferences and builds trust as it enables them to guide their health decisions and integrate core values. As such, the development of patient-centered care is holistic and may include families in the decision-making processes. As observed by Janerka et al. (2023), patient-centered demonstrates the change in nursing care that emphasizes a collaborative approach that offers systematic benefits to all stakeholders; from physicians, to nurse practitioners, and ascertains that patient values are honored in the care delivery process.

Under the concept of patient-centered care, nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals strive to integrate the best evidence emanating from research to provide holistic care that aligns with patient’s preferences, and values. In their study, Kwame and Petrucka (2021) found that providers can attain patient-centered care in clinical practice when they embrace care practices and effective communication approaches. The article emphasizes the role of incorporating practices that lead to quality outcomes through the collaboration between healthcare practitioners, and patients and their families. As such, patient-centered care models consider patient needs and goals, and empower patients and their significant ones to participate in care decisions (Grover et al., 2022).
