NR 439 Week 1 Discussion: Scholarship in Nursing Practice
NR 439 Week 1 Discussion: Scholarship in Nursing Practice
The involvement of nurses in scholarship is very critical as it enhances and promotes the development of new knowledge and skills, improves professional practice, and advances professional growth. Nursing scholarship allows nurses to critically evaluate research outcomes and use them in practice, improving patient care and outcomes (Milner et al., 2023). Involvement in scholarship leads to the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions in care delivery. Evidence-based practice (EBP) contributes to nurses’ ability to offer quality client care by integrating research findings into care plans (Abu-Baker et al., 2021). As a bachelor-prepared nurse, EBP integrates proven interventions that lower the risk of harm and improve patient satisfaction levels.
Cultivating a spirit of inquiry entails seeking answers, critically asking questions on the current interventions, and being ready to integrate innovative approaches to challenge the status quo. In nursing, cultivating a spirit of inquiry implies taking a proactive approach to learning, especially new research findings on treatment, and continually improving patient care. Nurses can incorporate a spirit of inquiry in their practice settings by seeking advanced education, collaborating with other professionals to implement innovative techniques, and regularly reflecting on their practice to identify problem areas for improvement (Hashish et al., 2020). For instance, a nurse can embrace the spirit of curiosity by inquiring about the unique presentation of patient symptoms, getting more information through further research, and collaborating with other providers.
Growth in nursing scholarship is a continuous process that needs ongoing learning and embracing change in practice through innovative and effective EBP interventions. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) outlines certain competencies for nursing scholarship. The two areas of growth opportunities based on these competencies include using evidence-based practice (EBP) where nurses can critically appraise research, get the best evidence, apply it in practice, and evaluate the outcomes (Welch et al., 2022). Secondly, through inter-professional collaboration, nurses work in cooperation with other healthcare professionals to deliver patient-centered care that involves using research evidence and the best current trends. Some of the strategies to enhance nursing scholarship include advancing education, integrating evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions, and collaborating with others in care delivery.

Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to explore the importance of scholarship in nursing practice and cultivating a spirit of inquiry.
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- CO 1: Examine the sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice. (PO 7)
- CO 5: Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice. (POs 7, 8)
Due Date
Graded discussions in Weeks 1-7 are due Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. For courses with Week 8 graded discussions, the discussion will close on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. MT. All Week 8 discussion requirements must be met by this deadline.
