NRNP 6675 Week10 Assignment: National Organization Of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies
The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has developed nine core competencies to guide NPs acquire the needed professional skills. These core competencies are connected with all NP specializations and the population of focus. The purpose of this paper is to explain how the program has prepared me to meet the NONPF competencies, taking part in social change and advocacy activities in Colorado.
Scientific Foundations: The program has equipped me with ample knowledge in medical sciences, which is fundamental in building a strong scientific foundation. I have learned about psychiatric clinical practice guidelines, evidence-based practice, treatment of vulnerable and diverse patient populations, and translational research (Chan et al., 2020).
Leadership: The program has prepared me on advocacy, professional accountability, and scholarship (Chan et al., 2020). I have learned about the NP scope of practice and standards of practice, which I should be well-versed with as a PMHNP to lead interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
Quality: The program has prepared me with knowledge and skills that I can employ to access and use information databases and analytically evaluate research findings. I have learned to apply current research findings to clinical practice and evaluate the complex relationships between healthcare cost, access, safety, and quality.
Practice Inquiry: The program has prepared me with research skills that I can apply to identify relevant research data and translate it into practice. I have acquired critical thinking skills to identify how I can utilize research data to better the effectiveness of clinical standards or change current guidelines to improve patient outcomes (Chan et al., 2020).
Technology and Information Literacy: The program has prepared me with information technology skills that I will incorporate into NP practice to improve care delivery. I can effectively use new healthcare technology to promote efficient and effective patient care delivery and improve outcomes.
Policy: The program has prepared me to develop health policies, assess the cross-disciplinary effect of policy, and analyze the influence of globalization on healthcare policy. I have learned the various strategies that I can employ in practice to campaign for policies that will improve healthcare delivery and access to care (Chan et al., 2020).
Health Delivery System: The program has prepared me to integrate knowledge of organizations and systems and employ negotiation and relationship-building skills to improve healthcare. I have learned to analyze the impact of the healthcare system on stakeholders and examine organizational structures and resource allocation.
Ethics: The program has prepared me with skills to solve ethical dilemmas by applying ethics in decision-making. I have learned to examine the ethical effect of clinical decisions and the ethical complexities in healthcare delivery (Chan et al., 2020).
Independent Practice: The program has adequately prepared me with the knowledge and skills to practice independently as a PMHNP. This will be vital in my future PMHNP practice where I will be expected to provide mental health care to patients across the lifespan.
Engaging In Social Change in My Community as a Nurse Practitioner
In my future NP practice, I will engage in social change by advocating for healthcare policies that will improve access to healthcare and outcomes for the community. I will identify gaps in healthcare access and delivery and propose policies to legislators to bridge these gaps (Russell, 2020). I will also participate in community health outreach programs and educate community members to modify lifestyle practices to improve health outcomes.
Legislative/Advocacy Activities in Colorado
The Colorado Nurses Association (CNA) has been on the frontline to advocate for policies against workplace violence (WPV). CNA has advocated for the implementation of WPV training for the healthcare staff that comprises de-escalation skills, violent person/aggression management, resiliency development, and self-defense techniques (CNA, n.d.). It advocates for organizations to develop and adhere to clear and consistent WPV policies and obtain support from leadership at every level.
Conclusion
The program has adequately prepared me with the knowledge and skills to meet the nine NONPF competencies. I will apply these competencies in my future practice to improve care delivery and patient outcomes. I will participate in community social change by identifying gaps in existing policies and advocating for policies that will improve delivery and access to healthcare.
