Curriculum vitae and resume are important documents in an individual’s professional journey. Their importance emanates from showcasing a person’s skills, experience, qualifications, and, in some cases, achievements. A well-written CV or a resume can be a vital tool for job seekers seeking employment (Gottlieb et al.,2021). Looking at the other side of the coin, CVs and resumes also help employers to efficiently and appropriately screen and eventually shortlist potential employees depending on the experiences and qualifications presented by the candidates (Woo et al.,2019). The implication is that individuals should have adequate knowledge regarding drafting the two documents, their fundamental differences, and instances when they can use either (Vu et al.,2022).

As earlier indicated, the two documents are both important in various aspects; however, there are hallmark differences between the two documents that should be understood. The significant difference is in the content of each document. The CV offers comprehensive and detailed information regarding a person’s educational background or achievement, career experience, scholarly activities, and leadership experiences (McCleary-Gaddy et al.,2022). As such, they are mainly used in research and academic-oriented fields. On the other hand, resumes express a person’s qualifications, skills, and professional experience concerning a particular job opening (Wallwork, 2022). The implication is that it mainly shows a person’s background and professional experience.NSG 7220 WEEK 5 Discussion

A CV may be preferred over a resume and vice-versa based on the prevailing conditions. CV is required in cases where detailed and comprehensive information regarding a person is needed, for example, when a person is applying for research positions, advanced degrees, or academic positions. A resume, on the other hand, is preferred when there is a need to tailor a person’s experiences to a particular job opening. In cases where employers expect to receive many applicants, they would prefer that people submit a resume, which is usually shorter. Exploring my CV revealed various areas I will target for development. One of them is my educational background. The section will be developed further, especially after I complete my DNP program, to include the achievement. I will also need to further develop my professional summary or background to include competencies the DNP program will enable me to achieve. I am also targeting to include a section for roles and responsibilities for every job experience.

Portfolio Development

In this assignment, you will begin by posting your curriculum vitae (CV) for your classmates to critique. Your CV is just one of many artifacts that should be included in your portfolio. Receiving feedback from your classmates on your CV can help you identify your areas of strength and areas for improvement. It is also important to understand the difference between a CV and a resume. Potential employers usually request a CV from advanced-degreed nurses. It is also important to note the significance of updating your CV every month. Routine updates allow you to keep an accurate record of all relevant professional accomplishments. This practice will also permit you to submit an updated CV at a moment’s notice when that perfect job becomes available. After you upload your CV to the Discussion Area, please answer the following questions:

  • What is the hallmark difference between a CV and a resume?
  • Why is one method preferred over another?
  • What are the three areas of your CV that you will target for development?

In addition to answering the given questions, list the documents that you have currently placed in your portfolio.

Update your portfolio this week because your course instructor will check your progress. If you were a potential employer reviewing your portfolio, what would you identify as strengths and opportunities to improve? What is the role of reflection in your portfolio development?

By the end of the week, respond to at least two classmates’ portfolios or CVs by providing constructive criticism.
