Learning Objectives Reflection
Through the provision of organized frameworks that guided patient assessment and treatment planning, the course was able to effectively assist in the purpose of studying clinical decision-making models. By utilizing these models, I was able to build tailored care plans for patients based on patient-specific criteria. This was accomplished through my clinical experiences, which included the management of patients with hypertension and diabetes. Through documentation exercises, I was able to reaffirm the purpose of examining healthcare coding systems. During these exercises, I made sure that SOAP notes coincided with acceptable diagnoses and billing considerations. Additionally, during patient meetings, it became more evident how to identify crucial assessments that influence patient decision-making. This was especially true when examining lifestyle characteristics, adherence, and socioeconomic determinants of health. My capacity to back clinical decisions with evidence-based guidelines was further improved by the exploration of scholarly literature, and the incorporation of all of these principles assisted me in developing a clinical decision-making style that was more self-assured and individualized.
Application to Certification and Practice
I believe the knowledge I gained from taking this class will greatly assist me in obtaining board certification as well as succeed in my future career. I developed improved critical thinking skills through understanding how to use clinical decision-making models, which will allow me to better analyze test questions and choose the best possible interventions. By learning about different coding systems within healthcare, I will have the tools necessary to create quality documentation in order to receive payment for my services delivered to patients. Developing the skills needed for patient assessment and clinical reasoning will enable me to practice more independently when dealing with patients with both acute and chronic illnesses. All of these competencies will not only help me pass my boards but will also assist me in providing high-quality nursing care as an advanced practice nurse working within the healthcare system today.
Course Experience and Insights Gained
In this course, I had an impactful experience with a patient suffering from uncontrolled hypertension and documented diabetes. This patient was compliant with all prescribed medications (medication adherence); therefore, this situation taught me that medication management is only the beginning of the management process; effective management requires more than just prescribed medications. It is necessary to understand the patient’s lifestyle, diet, stress, and daily routines. This experience showed me the significance of asking more in-depth and specific questions in order to identify any barriers to effective patient care. This will be valuable to me because it confirms the need for providing holistic, patient-focused care. Additionally, this experience reaffirmed that a successful outcome can only occur when there is collaboration between the patient and the healthcare professional, as well as tailoring interventions to the individual patient.
Personal Learning Needs and Improvement Plan
During the course, I learned that a significant area for my own personal development would be to develop my ability to independently create differential diagnoses and management plans. Throughout the course, I often struggled to make independent clinical decisions without seeking reassurance when presented with complex cases. My strategies for improvement will involve continued review of the clinical practice guidelines, engaging in case-based learning, and independently developing differential diagnoses before presenting them to and discussing them with my preceptors. In addition, I will continue to enhance my pharmacology knowledge to contribute to safe prescribing. Continual use of constructive feedback and reflection on my clinical experiences will also aid in my overall development. Through these efforts, I hope to strengthen my confidence and competence regarding clinical decision-making.
