NUR-530 Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge

After reviewing the course objectives, I have some moderate prior knowledge in evidence-based practice (EBP), quality improvement (QI), and research from previous academic and clinical experiences. EBP is defined as the combination of clinical expertise with patient preferences and the best available evidence, while QI refers to systematic improvement in the delivery of healthcare (Fowler, 2021). I have conceptual knowledge of these topics but limited practice applying them to in the ever-changing clinical environments.

From my clinical engagement, I recognize the behaviors and culture that may contribute to the practice of safety and organizational response to error. Based on Fencl et al. (2021), a “just culture” may be developed by focusing on psychological safety and learning, not punishment or blame. However, there seems to be inconsistency in applying a just culture. I am interested in understanding how transformational leadership (Pearson, 2020) contributes to culture and ease of application, and I am currently conceptualizing the application.

Besides my knowledge I these areas, I still have no prior knowledge of advanced performance improvement models, including Lean, Six Sigma, or 5S. As described by Ahn et al. (2021), these models used in practice were designed to improve workflow by eliminating things that do not add value. However, I only have conceptual familiarity, not practice. I similarly have no familiarity with systematic change management models used in practice. Harrison et al. (2021) describe some of the frameworks used to support the implementation of improvements, but I have no real-world application of such processes.

I look forward to discussions on QI and real-life examples of data-driven initiatives. I would particularly like to understand how to interpret healthcare performance measures and data (Au et al., 2021; Cascini et al., 2021) and the extent of statistical analysis required in assignments, as well as clarification of expectations of implementing projects, especially within a setting where control may be limited. This knowledge would support my engagement and contribution to the course objectives.
