Benchmark – Personal Worldview Paper

Nurse leaders should understand various leadership models and styles to adapt to different settings and also apply relevant strategies in supporting and inspiring subordinates. Again, applying leadership models is essential for utilization in professional settings to meet certification requirements. Nurse leaders practice various leadership styles since no one-size-fits-all approach is practical for any leader (Stanley et al., 2022). Articulating one’s leadership style is critical in building trust with the team and ensuring all have a common and shared goal or vision. Further, worldviews demonstrate one’s perception and approach to issues and their core understanding of the world. The purpose of this paper is to discuss my leadership model and personal worldview and their influence on my leadership style as well as their impact and inspiration on others.

Model of Leadership: Part 1

i). Personal Model of Leadership

Everyone has their version of leadership, usually a combination of leadership styles or the application of purely a certain leadership model like servant or transformational. The personal model of leadership mirrors one’s values and beliefs which affects their interactions in communities, organizations, and others. My leadership model is founded on developing a robust and honest approach to people and associated activities in life. My leadership model embodies the values that I hold dear and the beliefs that I practice. These values include integrity, honesty, transparency, resilience, humility, and diligence. Further, having a wider perspective of the world and the health system, a working knowledge of all aspects that affect nursing, a collaborative perspective and mindset as well as prioritizing quality patient care define my leadership model.

I encourage innovation and new ways of approaching healthcare delivery by integrating new trends and technologies aimed at improving patient care quality, safety, and outcomes. I believe in delegation, collaboration, and teamwork to develop better initiatives and approaches to addressing patient care challenges and advancing the nursing profession. Nurses practice in dynamic and diverse environments that implore them to develop dynamic leadership models to attain shared goals and objectives (Canavesi et al., 2022). Nursing leaders who possess certain skill sets and personality traits that enable them to manage high stress levels and navigate communication situations demonstrate dynamic leadership models and not a one-size-fits-all approach.

ii). Leadership Model Comparison

Servant leadership style, transformational leadership style, and charismatic leadership style are considered some of the best approaches to leadership for better organizational performance and influencing as well as inspiring employees to attain set goals. At the core of servant leadership is prioritizing the needs of others and serving them. Servant leaders enhance the growth and progress of their subordinates (Butts et al., 2022). Based on its seven characteristics, servant leaders possess strong mentorship abilities and commit to building teams as opposed to individual effort. At its core, servant leadership advances ethical decision-making and focuses on understanding the people in the team and developing their abilities while role modeling.

Transformational leadership entails creating and communicating a shared vision.

Transformational leaders create unity, develop bonds, and establish and sustain energy while instilling passion. Transformational leaders emphasize change and transformation by inspiring their followers to attain more than they ever thought possible by using their potential (Goens et al., 2024). Transformational leaders focus on the future, change, and people because they see the potential in all followers. On its part, charismatic leadership style entails using one’s communication skills, persuasiveness, and personality or charm to influence others. Charismatic leaders are forward-thinking in setting goals, have strong articulation attributes, the ability to tap into people’s emotions and demonstrate a clear vision or purpose. Charismatic leaders also possess strong engagement skills and are sensitive to their environment and the needs of their members.

These leadership approaches or styles are similar to my leadership model as they contain attributes that align with my abilities. For instance, servant leadership and transformational leadership styles all implore one to demonstrate dynamism and focus on innovative initiatives to enhance care delivery. Similarly, charismatic leaders have strong communication skills and understand people’s emotions through inherent values and beliefs (Samul, 2020).  The three leadership styles share similarities with my leadership model as it combine all the attributes from the models since no one-size-fits-all situations when handling diverse stakeholders like in healthcare settings.

iii). Diverse Teams and Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The healthcare environment is diverse because of different people from various sociocultural backgrounds. In their article, Bornman et al. (2023) emphasize the importance of developing effective leadership strategies in inter-professional collaboration in healthcare settings to help leaders meet various needs and cultivate appropriate skills. The two strategies to lead diverse teams and foster interdisciplinary collaboration include effective communication and promoting inclusion and participation. For instance, the participative leadership style encourages leaders to listen to their employees and involve them in making decisions. Participative leadership approach implores leaders to be inclusive, apply effective and appropriate communication skills, and share power and responsibilities by delegating (Butts et al., 2022). A participative leadership style encourages effective communication and collaboration in the interdisciplinary team as all members can share their perspectives on the issues at hand. Utilizing these two strategies embedded in the participative leadership model leads to the collective team effort in identifying issues, completing set projects, and creating solutions as opposed to the blame game (Bornman et al., 2023). Effective communication ensures that all understand the importance and need for change. Inclusion is essential in diverse teams to create a sense of belonging and encourage team members to freely share ideas.

iv). Personal Leadership Models and Strategies

My leadership mode prepares me to use these strategies by encouraging the importance of engaging others and nurturing core beliefs. Being a combination of three different leadership models, my leadership model is emphatic on listening to followers, embracing change and shared vision, and building effective collaborations to realize better care and professional development (Grace et al., 2022). My leadership model emphasizes that no one-fits-all approach is appropriate in leadership and leaders can combine positive attributes of various leadership models. Through this approach, they can employ effective communication and inclusion as strategies to develop interdisciplinary teams and collaboration.

Personal Worldview: Part B

i). Personal Worldview

Nurse leaders should lead from the front, support their subordinates and organizations, and attain their legacy by implementing set goals and objectives. A personal worldview emanates past experiences, thoughts, interactions, cultural, spiritual, and religious beliefs as well as teachings and upbringing. My worldview beliefs entail embracing diversity, celebrating our differences, showing genuine concern for others, and practicing core values as taught leading to better communities. Founded on Christian values and teachings, my worldview advances that all people are equal and possess inherent dignity because God created us in His image (Yoder-Wise et al., 2022). We must demonstrate the common good through virtues and moral values like love, service to others, integrity, honesty, and humility. As healthcare workers, our priority should be loving our patients and their families, and promoting a healing environment through evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions.

ii). Personal Worldview and Leadership Styles

My worldview influences my leadership style in various ways. Firstly, the Christian values in my worldview imply that I consider others as critical with inherent dignity because God created all equal and in His image. Therefore, leaders should utilize the most appropriate approach that entails a participative style for people to share their views and ideas in team development. My worldview implores me to serve others irrespective of their diversity and mentor them based on servant leadership style while also seeking their progress as advanced by the transformational leadership model. Being charismatic means inspiring others based on their communication abilities to attain change and progress in their endeavors, especially in nursing and healthcare settings (Stanley et al., 2022).  As observed by Greenleaf, servant leaders seek the best of their followers and focus on addressing their needs at the expense of their interests and personal desires (Salum et al., 2020). My worldview influences my leadership approach by combining all attributes of the three leadership models.

iii). Personal Worldview, Leadership, and Inspiration

Personal worldview and professional leadership behaviors like being authentic, and charismatic, and upholding values like transparency, humility, integrity, and honesty inspire others to follow a leader and his or her vision. My worldview focuses on serving others and upholding effective and critical ethical values and practices. Professional leadership behaviors like honesty, integrity, and transparency influence employees as they seek to emulate such values in their interactions with patients and other stakeholders. Modeling these behaviors through a dynamic leadership style that includes all positive leadership attributes from various leadership models inspires others to improve and be their best (Stanley et al., 2022). The implication is that a dynamic leadership approach ensures that a leader can integrity a particular style based on the situation, value system, and goals.

Conclusion

Nurse leaders should know and apply various leadership styles and models in their professional practice despite existing differences in cultures and settings. Nurse leaders should leverage appropriate leadership models and associated strategies to support and inspire nurses and other healthcare workers to attain a common or shared vision and organizational goals. Further, by leveraging their worldview, nurses can influence change, inspire others, and develop practice philosophy for effective care delivery in diverse healthcare settings.
