Practicum Activities Reflection:

The practicum site continues to offer many opportunities for progressive learning and improving clinical and leadership skills. One of the key observations in week 5 was a strong emphasis on patient-centeredness, where nursing professionals were reminded of their role in its implementation and sustenance. The organization is committed to providing patient-centered care since it is believed to be equitable care (BronxCare Health System, 2025). As a growing nursing professional and a leader in the evolving practice, patient-centeredness should be highly valued since it fosters patient engagement and ensures the best outcomes for patients. In week 6, the attention shifted to interprofessional collaboration. Within BronxCare, this collaboration is an important feature of healthcare excellence, which is accomplished by nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, physicians, and other professionals embracing teamwork to innovate solutions that address the needs of diverse patients. Healthcare facilities that promote interprofessional collaboration further benefit from therapeutic relationships, reduced errors, and creative teams (Kaiser et al., 2022). The main observation in week 7 was a strong emphasis on infection prevention and control. Leaders hold regular meetings to explore risks and encourage staff to adopt and implement evidence-based measures for protecting patients and their colleagues.

Application of Leadership:

Leadership styles affect interprofessional relationships, workplace culture, job satisfaction, and how staff members perceive their leaders. My preceptor, Priscilla Adjei, is a transformational leader who is attentive to details and likes open interactions. In everyday practice, Adjei leads by example and coaches the nursing staff to maximize their potential, improve gradually, and play a valuable role in fostering a culture of excellence that is greatly valued at BronxCare Health System. Besides commitment to organizational changes, transformational leaders motivate employees through their charismatic personalities, empowering them to deliver exceptional outcomes and tackle new challenges effectively (ANA Nursing Resources Hub, 2023; Ghorbani et al., 2023). Adjei’s transformational leadership has a significant impact on the nursing staff. For instance, it creates an inclusive work environment and ensures a motivated workforce that collaborates to accomplish a shared vision.

Like other transformational leaders, Adjei provides feedback and implements working strategies like group work and mentorship that are integral to a supportive work environment. Accordingly, staff members express feelings of support and helpfulness. In a supportive work environment, leaders also prioritize the nursing staff’s health and well-being needs (ANA Nursing Resources Hub, 2023). This support is part of BronxCare’s healthcare culture. So far, no highly impacting instance of dictating rather than leading has been identified. Regularly, the preceptor does things designed to “build staff,” like not overworking someone to avoid mental or physical exhaustion, providing self-care tips, and creative problem-solving instead of following a strict schedule.

Practicum Project Preparation:

Stakeholders are valuable influencers of practice change due to their insights, active participation, and direct support. Communication allows stakeholders to understand the project and support its implementation. The present project is on reducing falls in the emergency department. As a result, key stakeholder groups, including the management, departmental leaders, and the nursing staff, will be briefed about what the project entails as they ask fundamental questions regarding its goals, resource needs, implementation time, and other aspects. There will also be regular communication on the project’s progress, milestones, and emerging challenges. Notifications on updates and milestones will be weekly while information on challenges will be delivered when a challenge is identified. Education is needed on implementation steps, project evaluation, and the roles of individuals and groups in the fall prevention project. Proper education empowers healthcare teams and encourages them to facilitate positive change and support critical fall prevention activities (Linnerudet al., 2023; McLennan et al., 2024). Similarly, stakeholder education is crucial to inform members of their roles, gather their support, and ensure all concerns that can hamper participation are clarified.

Leadership Video Reflection:

Nursing leadership is primarily about guiding other healthcare professionals to execute their roles through motivation and inspiration. The servant approach typifies spiritual leadership since Jesus inspires servant leaders. The video “Servant Leadership- Issue of Rule” focuses on the leadership traits that should not be integrated into servant leadership. One of the things I learned from the video is that servant leaders are not rulers. The narrator describes “rule” as a management trait that leaders committed to serving and inspiring their followers must purge out of their style (Grand Canyon University, 2022). Ruling breaches the servant aspect since it is about authority over others (followers). Its application implies expecting followers to serve the leader, something that Jesus advised his disciples not to happen among them.

The second thing that I learned is that leadership by ruling brings anger. This anger stems from leaders expecting those they lead to carry out their will (Grand Canyon University, 2022). In the collaborative nursing practice, leaders should be committed to promoting healthy, respectful relationships that enhance job satisfaction and make everyone valued as treasured team members. Achieving this goal requires a moral-based leadership where serving is natural, and others’ growth and well-being are prioritized (Demeke et al., 2024). Unfortunately, the anger that stems from expecting others to carry out the leaders’ will is detrimental to healthy relationships. As a result, a servant approach without the “ruling” component should be the cornerstone of spiritual leadership to ensure a collaborative work environment where the needs of others (patients, nursing staff, management, visitors, etc.) are prioritized over the leader’s self-interests.
