NURS 6052: World Is Evidence-Based Practice
Healthcare organizations use evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions to enhance the quality of care and generate better outcomes for patients. EBP is a core concept in healthcare as it integrates different aspects that include the best research evidence, experience and expertise of healthcare providers, and patient preferences (Melnyk et al., 2023). Many healthcare entities have incorporated EBP as a core part of their quality care delivery, reducing cost burden, and enhancing patient outcomes.
The selected organization in this case is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHQR) is one of the agencies within the Health and Human Services (HHS) headquarters in Maryland. The agency was established as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research in 1989 as a part of the Public Health Service (PHS) to improve the quality, appropriateness, and effectiveness of health care service as well as accessibility to care through different activities that include carrying out and supporting research, demonstration initiatives, and evaluations as well as development of guidelines and disseminating health care services information.
The AHRQ supports research aimed at improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans as captured in its mission (AHRQ, 2022). The organization’s EBP efforts are well-captured through its mission which states that it produces evidence to ensure a safer, high quality, accessible and equitable as well as affordable healthcare for all Americans through the Health and Human Services (HHS) department. The organization is categorical that through working with other partners and within the department, more stakeholders will understand, appreciate and use evidence in delivery of better care.
Again, the agency has established an Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) that allows it to sponsor and support the development of different reports to help public and private-sector organizations in their efforts to enhance the quality of healthcare in the country. The website asserts that EPCs exist in universities, medical centers, and research establishments in the country (AHRQ) (2023). Established over 25 years ago, these centers demonstrate the critical role of the agency in developing evidence-based interventions to improve care delivery and reduce overall costs.
AHRQ’s work is grounded in EBP as it focuses on improving patient outcomes through research evidence and best practices. Through its EPCs, the agency ensures that healthcare organizations use current interventions to deliver care that meets patient and health population needs (AHRQ, 2023b). The organization’s EPC initiative which is over 25 years old demonstrates its focus on EBP to improve the delivery of quality patient care.
The information about AHRQ has changed my perception about it in relation to EBP. At the core of EBP is the cultivation of a spirit of inquiry and search for the best evidence as well as appraising the evidence and implementing it while also assessing the outcomes and sharing results. Therefore, I believe that research and implementation are core aspects of effective EBP practice in healthcare organizations.

Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?
March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.

To Prepare:
- Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP.
- Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative).
- Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by visiting the websites they shared and offering additional examples of EBP or alternative views/interpretations to those shared in your colleagues’ posts.
