Cultural Competency in Healthcare

One of the most challenging issues concerning perinatal care is the disparities in the accessibility of high-quality care. There have been different healthcare outcomes among the ethnic and racial minorities. Studies have indicated that healthcare workers are likely to experience a high number of adverse outcomes among women of color with low socioeconomic status during pregnancy and childhood when compared to white women (Fair et al., 2021). This issue shows that healthcare workers should put more effort into addressing economic and social factors that influence healthcare when providing these vulnerable women with healthcare services.

Another issue that arises is the inclusion of culturally competent healthcare services and patient-centered care when providing healthcare services to individuals of different races and from all walks of life. Culturally competent healthcare workers helping perinatal patients should have adequate knowledge about their personal beliefs, cultural practices, and religious beliefs. It has been established that healthcare workers who possess these skills have been essential in promoting positive healthcare outcomes and experiences among these women (Fair et al., 2021). Even though there have been widespread efforts to raise awareness of the importance of cultural competence, areas that have not integrated this information have led to patient dissatisfaction with the quality of care provided to them.

In one of my clinical rotations, I came across a patient from another cultural background who expressed a desire to adhere to their cultural practices while undergoing perinatal care but whose demands were not met during childbirth. The healthcare team was reluctant to adhere to her cultural beliefs and practices, which raised serious ethical issues. The healthcare team was very strict about following the healthcare procedures and policies provided by the hospital. The patient’s preferences were dismissed throughout her stay at the hospital. The patient seemed to be distressed at this moment, which probably affected her overall experience about the quality of care she was given at the hospital. After this experience, on reflection, I realized that it is important for healthcare workers to respect the beliefs and the cultural practices of the patients as they help to enhance their trust in the healthcare teams and help to improve their experiences in the hospitals during admission. Adhering to the wishes of the patients can also help to improve the overall healthcare outcomes, ensuring that their well-being is considered when giving them essential healthcare.

After this experience, I believe that cultural competence is an integral and essential component of nursing care. If nurses adopt this approach, they will be able to provide equitable and high-quality healthcare services to patients from all different walks of life. Culturally competent nurses ensure that they actively listen to their patient’s concerns and incorporate them into the care plan. This approach to crucial and sensitive perinatal care has been established to be essential in achieving positive healthcare outcomes and improving patient satisfaction (Červený et al., 2022).

I watched the video where Esel explains why Filipinos prefer burial to cremation. In the video, she explains that most funeral homes advise customers who do not have enough financial resources to organize the funeral for their loved ones to consider cremating them. She argues that even though cremation is a good option, relatives of the deceased who would not have seen the dead person would like to see them for the last time and pay their last respects. Most cultures like to bury their own in a grave, which they can visit anytime they would like to. However, other cultures also like to cremate the deceased ones and store their ashes close to them. So, it is a matter of preference and cultural beliefs. In case of financial challenges, most people prefer to pull together their resources in an attempt to give the deceased a decent burial. The knowledge that has been garnered from this class is essential as it will help me to listen individually to each patient and acquire information about their personal and cultural beliefs, helping me to ensure that these needs and beliefs are met throughout their care.
