The selected topic for this essay is telehealth use for mental health services delivery. Technology use in mental healthcare has gained considerable popularity in the modern world. Evidence shows that it reduces healthcare costs patients incur and optimizes safety and quality outcomes. Therefore, the article by Bulkes et al. (2022) was selected for analysis because of its relevance to the topic. The study by Bulkes et al. (2022) compared the clinical outcomes of a matched sample of patients in a private, nationwide behavioral health treatment system who received in-person, intensive psychological treatment before the Covid-19 pandemic to the outcomes of a distinctive group of patients who received telehealth treatment during the pandemic.
The researchers used 1192 participants in the in-person intensive psychological treatment and 1192 in the telehealth treatment. The study outcomes included changes in depressive symptoms and quality of life. The study results revealed insignificant differences in the admission score on either assessment comparing telehealth or in-person groups. Patients who required partial hospitalization stayed longer if their treatment was remote. The researchers concluded that telehealth is a viable treatment alternative with no significant differences between telehealth and in-person groups in depressive symptom reduction and a substantial increase in self-reported quality of life in both groups.
Inferential statistics, including subjective analyses of variance were used. ANOVAs measured the differences between telehealth and in-person groups. One ANOVA was conducted for scores at admission, discharge, and percentage change over time between admission and discharge. This study is appropriate since it provides insights into the potential of telehealth use in mental health. It also identified the challenges that must be addressed for effective telehealth use in practice. Using inferential statistics strengthened the study’s application to evidence-based practice. It differentiated between the effectiveness of telehealth and in-person treatment for mental health. It also predicted changes in mental health outcomes of using both interventions over time.

You are the DNP-prepared nurse responsible for overseeing staffing for the telehealth services provided at your practice. To determine the number of nurses that you might need for these services, you must determine how many patients might be interested in using the telehealth services versus the traditional clinical practice setting. For a week, you ask each patient visiting the practice his or her interest in setting up a visit via telehealth services. At the conclusion of the week, you use this data and reasoning to develop a statistic of the population interested in telehealth services. You have successfully used inferential statistics to help guide your decision-making for your practice.
The scenario outlined provides a random sampling and assumptions to develop a conclusion. With assumptions, and in this case, a small random sampling, this scenario is ripe with the possibility of error. However, how might inferential statistics be used in a valid and credible way?
The design of a study determines the validity of the results, and if done following appropriate techniques, inferential statistics can determine clear differences and help researchers to form conclusions. In your Discussion, you will focus on two forms of identifying differences in groups: t-tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA).
