Paddle into Fitness: Stand‑Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

What is SUP?
Stand‑up paddleboarding (SUP) is a low‑impact, full‑body activity where you stand on a long, stable board and propel yourself with a single‑blade paddle. It mixes balance, core strength, and cardio — perfect for a fun group outing (Hibbert et al., 2023).

Why try it?

  • It works your whole body, especially your core, legs, shoulders, and back.
  • It gives you both cardio and strength training: you raise your heart rate and build muscle while keeping pressure off your joints.
  • It is an outdoor, social activity that’s fun with friends and great for mood, stress relief, and team-building.

Typical Costs
• Hourly Rental: ~$20 per hour (1–2 hour sessions).
• 1‑day / multi‑day: ~$70/day (single SUP).
• Lessons / guided tours / SUP yoga: $25–$75 per person.

When & Where
• Capital SUP — Quiet Waters Park & Eastport (Annapolis): Sunset paddles, lessons, fitness classes. https://capitalsup.com/eastport-nautilus-point-annapolis/
• Paddle Annapolis: Rentals & guided tours from downtown Annapolis.
• Chesapeake Paddle Sports (Deale): Eco‑tours, SUP yoga, camps, and rentals.

What to bring / Wear
Quick‑dry clothes or swimsuit; water shoes; sunscreen; hat; sunglasses (with strap); water bottle; waterproof phone bag.

Safety & Accessibility Notes
PFDs provided; start on calm waters; sit‑on‑board or tandem options for lower balance ability; check weather and tides.

Physical Activity Benefits
Intensity: SUP can range from light to moderate, depending on how fast you paddle and how windy the water is.

 Time per session: A 30–60-minute paddle gives you a solid workout.

 How it helps: Those sessions count toward the CDC/WHO goal of about 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week.

Group Idea: Sunset Social Paddle (2 hours)
Plan: Meet 45 minutes before sunset so everyone can check in, get fitted with equipment, and receive a brief safety/orientation. Then enjoy a relaxed 90-minute paddle on calm water. Finish with a short debrief while sharing light snacks.

Estimated cost per person: $20–$35 (covers board rental; expect to add a small tip and a share of snacks).
