My motivation to pursue PMHNP emanates from witnessing the impact of mental health on individuals, families, and health populations. Having practiced in healthcare for some time, I have seen how untreated mental illness can influence physical health, relationships, and the overall quality of life. I have always been moved by the increasing need for individuals and populations to access psychiatric care. Therefore, I was inspired to expand my practice scope so that I can diagnose, treat, and advocate for individuals with mental health conditions. I am also passionate about reducing mental illness stigma and increasing access to evidence-based psychiatric and mental health care, especially in underserved and vulnerable populations.

Professional Identity/ Core Values, Beliefs, and Goals Guiding My Work

(2022), professional identity refers to the self-concept individuals develop in relation to their profession, encompassing values, skills, experiences, and the unique value they bring to their work. I define my professional identity as a compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered nurse committed to serving patients to the best of my ability, experience, and training. Among the core values that guide my work are respect for all, integrity, and empathy. I believe that every patient deserves to be heard, validated, and treated with dignity. I also value lifelong learning, as I appreciate its role in remaining up to date with current evidence and improving skills and competence. My goals include equipping myself with the necessary skills to be able to advocate for systemic changes associated with access to care.

I believe equity means not only treating everyone fairly but also acknowledging barriers that disproportionately affect marginalized populations. Additionally, DEI strengthens my ability to provide compassionate and individualized care to all patients.

Anticipated Challenges in this Program

One of the challenges I anticipate in this program is being able to meet all my responsibilities. Balancing coursework, clinical hours, and personal responsibilities will require strong time management and resilience. The other challenge is the complexity of psychiatric diagnosis and psychopharmacology, which presents a significant learning curve, and I expect to be challenged to think critically and apply theoretical knowledge in clinical settings. Additionally, developing therapeutic communication skills at an advanced level will require ongoing self-reflection and growth. I also expect the program to push me outside of my comfort zone, especially in managing complex cases and ethical dilemmas. However, Ryan et al. (2025) note that nurses should embrace professional challenges as an opportunity for professional development and skill refinement.

Through this program, I hope to achieve growth both personally and professionally. Academically, I aim to develop a strong foundation in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and psychopharmacological management. Professionally, my goal is to become a competent, confident PMHNP capable of providing safe, evidence-based, and compassionate care across the lifespan. I also hope to strengthen my leadership and advocacy skills to influence mental health policy and expand access to services. On a personal level, I seek to cultivate resilience, cultural humility, and self-awareness, recognizing that personal growth enhances professional effectiveness. Moreover, I aspire to serve vulnerable and underserved populations, reduce mental health disparities, and contribute meaningfully to improving the quality and accessibility of psychiatric and mental health care in my community.

My pursuit of the PMHNP role is grounded in a deep commitment to mental health advocacy, professional growth, and equitable patient care. I recognize that this program will challenge me academically and personally, yet I am prepared to embrace these challenges as opportunities for development.
